Getting Older, and Getting Stronger

No matter how you decide to enjoy your retirement, consider keeping exercise part of your routine. Not only is it a great way to stay healthy, but it will keep you fit so you can keep enjoying all the good days ahead, and not be slowed down just because you’re getting older. After all, age is just a number.

You Don’t Have to Run a Marathon

And listen, if you desear to run a marathon, we’ve got tips for that, too. But if you’re more interested in just maintaining a good workout routine, then we’ve got just the thing for you.

We spoke to Paul Mueller, an exercise specialist with Hancock Wellness Center, about simple but effective exercises seniors can do to stay healthy as they age. And the first step is for him to understand what you’re looking for in a workout.

“I make sure to ask the right questions and get curious about where my patients are in their fitness journey.” Mueller explained. “Then I take that information, add it to the fitness knowledge and experience I have, and formulate a safe way to help my patients build upon their health and well-being. Exercise and movement of the body is preventative medicine.”

Mueller added that simple exercises such as squats, lunges, or even just walking on various terrains to add tension were all great, simple ways to maintain flexibility, stability, and strength.

Additionally, however, Mueller noted there were three key things to pay attention to when working out: Intentionality, progression, and listening to your body.

“As we age, our bodies don’t quite move as well as they once did. Use your muscles intentionally for controlling your body.” Mueller advised. “Build fitness in slow increments, so you’re not too sore for daily life, and listen to your body to find what level of fitness you are capable of today, and work within it.”

Overall, Mueller stressed you don’t have to be a certain age to still get benefits from working out.

“I currently have a client with cerebral palsy who loves to box and build his strength.” Said Mueller. “Another client of mine is a retiree and at the age of 85 is looking to continue enjoying life for a long time. He’s doing pull-ups on the assisted pull-up machine like a rockstar. There’s such a variety of people I have the privilege to work with.”
